Water now dearer than oil. Sept 2010
Water that is fit for human consumption costs about $ 100 per barrel while oil is trading in the $ 80's lately. Dublin City Council says supply is balanced on a knife edge. Greater Dublin region demand is running at 545 million litres a day. By 2022 demand is reckoned to reach 627 litres per day.
The €500 million project to pump water from Lough Derg will take 10 years to complete so is unlikely to be delivered in time to meet demand. As water supply reaches a crisis threshold across the world - securing Ireland's supply will be paramount to attract industry into the future.
